Meditation for BeginnersBy Bharata
Regular meditation is for your spirit what food is for your body. It nourishes and replenishes your whole being, regenerates your life spirit and heals your emotional injuries. Develop the firm habit of daily practice. Regular daily practice is better than volumes and volumes of theory. Early morning and evening, when the environment has a more peaceful vibration, are the best times for mediation. Try to meditate at the same time and in the same place each day. Find a quiet, peaceful place for your meditation - a room that might not be used as much as other parts of your house. If that is not practical use a part of a room that seems quieter than other rooms. Keep it very clean and tidy. Sit on the floor in a comfortable cross-legged position. Elevating the buttocks with a cushion or a folded blanket makes this more comfortable. Elderly of infirm may sit of a chair. Close your eyes and do a few minutes of deep breathing to relax the body and begins to quiet the mind. Then make your breathing as slow and as quiet as possible. The mind will follow the breath and become quieter. In yogic meditation a simple mantra such as Om is used to help get the mind quiet and peaceful. Mentally repeat Om with each quiet inhalation and each quiet exhalation. Try to let everything go, flowing with the mental repetition of Om. For complete beginners, start with five to ten minutes of this practice, gradually increasing to thirty minutes or longer. Let your practice flow; don’t strain or force the mind. If you would like to participate in group meditations, free daily guided meditations are held at Yoga and Inner Peace at 6 AM Mondays through Saturday during our teacher training courses and on Sundays at 6 PM. |
